Michael Owen reveals details of his Newcastle deal that allowed Liverpool a cut-price move

Michael Owen has admitted he only joined Newcastle as a way of a stepping stone to earn a move back to his former club Liverpool.

Owen came through the ranks at Anfield, before becoming a global star in Liverpool as well as England's attack before he left to join Real Madrid in 2004.

However, after a mixed year at the Bernabeu he admitted to wanting to jump at a chance of returning to Liverpool - who had just won the Champions League - before being left stunned that Madrid's negotiations with a Premier League club turned out to be Newcastle.
